Storage Tips

Self Storage Tips For Monument CO

1. Smallest Space
Rent the smallest amount of space you will need, and pack the unit full.
2. Gather Materials

Start by gathering as many boxes as you think you will need as well as tape, markers, and packing material (e.g., foam shipping noodles, bubble wrap, packing paper or towels).

3. Uniform Sizes

If possible, try to use uniformly sized boxes for easy stacking.

4. Inventory

Make up an inventory list of your items and keep it in a safe place (at home or in a safe deposit box) away from the unit.

5. Prepare

Prepare your space by placing a protective cover on the floor under your goods.

6. Keep Dry

Place your storage items on 2×4 boards or on pallets to guard against dampness. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp.

7. Access

Plan your storage space. Place items that you may need to access often in the front of the unit.

8. CAUTION

Do not store anything COMBUSTIBLE (e.g., paint thinner, gasoline, solvents, or paint).

9. Easier Access

Try to leave an aisle down the center of the storage unit for easier access. Leave a small space between the walls and boxes to allow for air circulation.

10. Stack

Stack heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top.

11. Strong Boxes

Be sure your boxes are strong enough to hold 25-30 pounds (although we suggest not putting too much in each box).

12. List Contents

List contents of boxes on all four sides; number the boxes and seal with tape.

13. Wrap It Up

Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper and packed in sturdy boxes. Stack them on top.

14. Fragile

Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked “FRAGILE” and stacked on end.

15. Extra Space

Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for pictures, knick-knacks, china, silverware, small items, etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels, or blankets to prevent breakage.

16. Appliances

Larger appliances make excellent “packaging cases” for blankets, towels, tablecloths and clothes.

17. Electronics

Put TVs and other electronics in the rear of your unit.

18. Stored Together

Shovels, hoes, rakes, and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside each other.

19. Removable Legs

Tables that have removable legs should be broken down to save space.

20. Sofas and Loveseats

Sofas and loveseats can be stored on end to save floor space. Wrap cushions in plastic and place on top of sofas.

21. Sharp or Heavy Objects

Avoid placing sharp or heavy objects on top of upholstered furniture.

22. Stuffed Furniture

Cover stuffed furniture with cardboard or blankets to protect against dust.

23. Mattresses

If you stand mattresses on their sides, prop them up so they stand straight. Otherwise, they tend to bend out of shape and become lumpy.

24. Metal Items

Wipe any items made of metal – bikes, metal tables, tools, etc. – with machine oil to prevent rusting.

What wonderful people and a wonderful place. It is clean, easy to load and unload using the elevator. I recommend this storage facility above all others!

Shaun Vanderpool

I have moved many many times and have never had such an accommodating experience. The first thing I noticed was the amount of security cameras. To enter you must again enter your access code. Some may not like this but I respect MHSS for caring about my belongings. Second the staff is absolutely top notch; friendly, helpful and still get the job done correctly the first time. Third is the care of the facility and customers. They offer a free moving truck( nearly brand new), a utility dolly(free), moving blankets(free). Upon unloading you'll notice several hand carts which makes unloading much faster. I counted 6 but there may be more. Lastly I want to personally thank the owner and staff for an amazing facility. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This place is an absolute storage dream. They've literately thought of everything, then made it nicer, then went over it with a magic fine tooth customer service comb and somehow made it even better. We've had three different spaces with them now. The indoor space is somehow cleaner than most 5 star restaurants. The ceilings are higher than you could stack your stuff if you were the jolly green giant. The lock sliders are new and the most tamper proof I've seen. I don't know how I will get in when I lose my lock key, that's my only concern. The outdoor drive up space doors are tall enough to to walk through on stilts if you'd like and the deep ones fit full size RV's. OH - speaking of RV's, they've also got fresh water, sewage dump and enough space to turn around an 18 wheeler (actually witnessed that today). There's a truck they offer for free upon move-in and the lady that runs the place is literately the nicest person I've dealt with during our entire move experience. Even on our initial phone call, she didn't have the size we needed right away, but she was the only one who wanted to work with us to combine a few she did have and find us a solution. (This was the THIRD storage facility we've dealt with in person and probably the 6th one we called. We've seen a thing or two, I'm not proud) Save yourself a headache and call these people first.

From the moment I called Monument Hill Self Storage and talked to Leah, I was blown away by the above and beyond customer service provided by Leah and her husband Scott. Leah stayed late to get my paperwork finished and was so darn nice it made my day. In addition to the great staff, the storage area is new, clean, secure and well lit. Today I needed help moving the family wine into a unit while my military husband was deployed. The owner, John Aronson, was amazing and personally assisted me in this endeavor. We have a total of 3 units here and I highly recommend Monument Hill Self Storage.
